Florida’s chief financial officer told the crowd at an Equality Florida reception that gay parents should be allowed to adopt children if it’s in the child’s best interest. Alex Sink, who is also the leading Democratic candidate for governor, said it’s up to a judge to decide whether a child should be adopted by gay parents, and that decision should be made case-by-case.
Florida is the only state in the country that has an outright ban on adoption by same-sex parents.
Sink’s possible opposition for the governor’s seat, Republican leading candidate Attorney General Bill McCollum, has argued the opposite point of view, defending the state’s ban.
The event where Sink made her announcement was held in Fort Lauderdale on Nov. 15 and raised $175,000 for Equality Florida.
