Obama mentions DADT – not by name – in State of the Union

As President Obama’s first State of the Union addressed approached, gay media was abuzz with rumors that he would use the platform as a first step to finally follow through on his promise to repeal “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” the law that prohibits LGBTs from being open about their sexuality while serving in the military.

The president did reference the rule during last night’s address, although the language was rather vague and a potential timeline regarding the law’s repeal is wide open for interpretation.

Here are his exact words:

“This year — this year, I will work with Congress and our military to finally repeal the law that denies gay Americans the right to serve the country they love because of who they are. It’s the right thing to do.”

The statement was greeted with enthusiastic applause and a shot of stony-faced military personnel.

Do you think “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” will be repealed in 2010?
