Creative fundraising at The Center
Under interim director Randy Stephens, The [GLBCC] Center is rebuilding—literally and figuratively. Faced with a compromised building and other financial challenges, volunteers are creating a video for Ellen in hopes that she’ll spring for a high-profile makeover a la Oprah. They’ve captured the holes in the roof, broken windows and moldy flooring, and collected on-camera interviews with Center volunteers and beneficiaries. At noon on Saturday, Sept. 11, they will hold a flash-mob dance event in their parking lot on Mills Avenue that will be added to the video. And if you think that’s creative, on Monday, Sept. 20 from 6-9 p.m., Mesos Cosmetic and Laser will host a Botox benefit at The Center. The popular cosmetic procedure will be offered at discounted rates, along with wine, soft music and a silent auction. Visit glbcc.org.

Hot waiters, cool waters
When local realtor David Dorman assured attendees that his Aug. 28 pool party and BBQ would be “hot and delicious,” who knew he was talking about bartenders? Dorman hired two charming and jaw-droppingly handsome young men to assist with service and clean up at his annual aquatic event, and the eye candy was as good as advertised. As expected, Dorman’s fête offered close to 100 swimsuit-attired guests with an endless banquet of food, libations, and high-spirited high jinks, deliciously punctuated by the shirtless servers slinging cold drinks, steamy smiles and scorching physiques. Take a note, party planners: Nothing spices up a poolside BBQ like a couple of sides of beef!

Orlando Crush quashes opponents’ whines

At the Gay Softball World Series, some teams would apparently prefer to rely on technicalities rather than earn their victories on the field. The Orlando Broadway Crush qualified in the B-Division for the GSWS in Columbus, Ohio, held Aug. 15-22. After defeating some higher-seeded teams, the Crush was protested by two successive opponents who claimed that the skills of some members of the Orlando team should have placed them in the uppermost A-Division. Had the protests been successful, the Crush faced disqualification and a bitter end to their inspiring journey. The GSWS review board upheld the Crush’s standing and they went on to finish in third-place. Incidentally, neither of the protesting teams was among the top finishers. It’s rumored they turned their whines into sour grapes.
