Monday Ripples, No. 17

“We must change in order to survive.” –Pearl Bailey

To start off this week’s Monday Ripples, I have a little feel good update for you. Dedicated Scottie Saves the World supporter Deb Simpson won Watermark’s package – a red chair designed by Brendan O’Connor and a half-page ad in our print version – during the Red Chair Affair benefiting the Red Chair Project. Deb turned around and donated the ad to Breakthrough Theatre of Winter Park, in return the theatre is displaying the Scottie Saves the World chair in their lobby!

Feel good? Told you.

So here we are on Monday and, after two weeks giving you the Ripples a day late, I’m back on track! As ever, I hope these links will inspire you in the week ahead, and beyond.

Eco Drama
Green Theatre Collective
I’ve spent the better part of my life participating in theatre – for better or worse – so when I heard about the Green Theatre Collective, my ears and heart perked up. When I’m going about my daily routine, I often find myself musing about ways my jobs could be more green; usually these thoughts end when realizing the organizational political horseshit I would have to go through to make it happen. That’s probably why the cool cats at Green Theatre Collective are doing it themselves. Through the link I’ve provided here, you can contribute to this group’s efforts. You can also nose around IndieGoGo for other worthwhile projects you can support.

China Solar Syndrome
On Clean Energy, China Skirts the Rules
China will be responsible for producing more than half the world’s solar panels this year and the way they’re going about it has driven the price down by half. Sounds good, yes? Well, as you wade your way through this New York Times article, you’ll find the answer to that question isn’t quite so simple. I have to wonder, as I’m reading this dense article, if this is really about fair business practice or simply sour grapes, but I’ll let you decide for yourself. To me, the important thing here is that these alternative forms of energy become affordable and the sooner, the better.

Chic Sustainable Housing
A Home for the Future
Orlando actor Blake Logan posted the link above on his Facebook proclaiming: “I. want. this. house!” As you’ll see by clicking on his name and viewing his website, Blake is easy on the eyes, so all the boys would be plenty happy if he lived in a house with window walls! All kidding aside, I have to agree with Blake, this house, designed by students at Virginia Tech, is something else and exploring it is made even more fun with this interactive link from the NY Times. Who knows, there may be many of living in glass houses in the future.

Suzuki Superstar
Force of Nature – The David Suzuki Movie Trailer
My man turned me on to David Suzuki. Anytime we talk about him, Brendan gushes, “Isn’t he fantastic?” I have to agree. Now David Suzuki’s story has been made into a film. Scientist, activist, international icon, and he is the stuff that heroes are made of, in my book. How do I make sure this film comes to Orlando?
