Teams prepare for Orlando Meltdown tourney

Teams from around the country are preparing for the annual Orlando Meltdown softball tournament slated for the weekend of Jan. 14-16.

MeltdownPrep_503231519.jpgThe long-running tournament will return to the Lake Fairview and Seminole County Softball complex as with round-robin play beginning on Saturday, Jan. 15, at 8 a.m. As of press time, nearly 50 teams had registered for the North American Gay Amateur Athletic Alliance tournament.

Teams had until Jan. 5 to register and due to overwhelming responses from previous years, the 2011 tournament is limited to 65 teams. As of press time, 17 teams had registered for the C-Division; 17 teams were listed in the D-Division; and eight teams and seven teams were registered in the women’s recreational and competitive divisions, respectively.

The tournament’s registration begins at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 14, at The Parliament House in Orlando and a managers’ meeting is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. Teams and players may also register at the fields at 7 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 15. Round-robin play begins promptly at 8 a.m. and tournament play begins at 9 a.m.

On Saturday night, players and fans are invited to celebrate at Mr. Sisters from 9 p.m. to 2:30 a.m. Tournament play resumes Sunday, Jan. 16, at 8 a.m.

Organizers will close the tournament Sunday evening at Mr. Sisters at 7:30 p.m. For more details on the tournament or to see the list of participating teams, visit Orlando-Meltdown.com.
