More than 50 teams from around the country will descend upon Tampa Bay for the 17th Annual Gasparilla Classic softball tournament Feb. 18-20. The NAGAAA-affiliated tournament is the oldest of its kind in the state, according to the tournament web site.
Registration for the tournament closed on Jan. 31 and seven teams are slated to play in the B-Division bracket. In the C-Division, 21 teams are signed up and 27 teams are listed in the D-Division. Suncoast Softball League directors, who organize the tournament, are utilizing three fields throughout the Bay Area for the weekend-long event.
B-Division play will be at the Greco fields in Tampa, where the league usually plays on Sundays. C-Division players will take the fields at the Ed Radice Complex in North Tampa and D-Division players will play at the Woodlawn Fields in St. Petersburg.
The Tampa Westshore Marriott will serve as the host hotel for the tournament and early registration will be available on Friday, Feb. 18. Round robin play begins on Saturday, Feb. 19 at 8 a.m. and regular tournament play is expected to start at noon.
