More than 500 running enthusiasts are expected to descend upon downtown Sarasota in the early morning hours of Thanksgiving Day to raise money for ALSO Out Youth.
The Second annual Turkey Trot offers both a 5K and 10K run over the John Ringling Causeway Bridge. Registration for both races is $25 before Nov. 21. Same-day registration is $30 and proceeds benefit ALSO Out Youth, which strives to end discrimination among LGBT youth.
â┚¬Å”We have faced many challenges the last few years, and with [the community's] help we have made it through and are now seeing a record number of youth at our drop-in center, expanded programs, and a new sense of accomplishment in making our community a better place for our LGBTIQ youth and their families and friends,â┚¬Â ALSO Board President Greg Taylor said in a statement.
Both races begin at the Hyatt Hotel in downtown Sarasota and registration includes a commemorative t-shirt and breakfast. Sponsorship opportunities are still available, according to organizers.
The Top 3 finishers in each division will receive a prize.
According Taylor, the organization's increased visibility in the community is thanks to a revamped vision and funding.
â┚¬Å”Our executive director Sue Westcott and our Board of Directors have really stepped up to promote our renewed message and vision,â┚¬Â Taylor said in a letter. â┚¬Å”With a reduction in grants and business donations, we have expanded our events and have found innovative ways to fund our programs. But community support is needed now more than ever.â┚¬ÂÂ
Registration begins at 6:30 a.m. on Thanksgiving morning, Thursday, Nov. 24, at the Hyatt Hotel.
Several improvements are expected at this year's race, including vendors and specific lane closures for participants.
