Annual bike ride returns to benefit Trinity Charities

For the fourth time, bicyclists will take on a 12-mile expanse of Legacy Trail to raise money for HIV/AIDS programs in Sarasota and Manatee counties.

Trinity Charities' AIDS Ride returns on Saturday, April 21, and organizers hope to surpass last year's record effort of $11,000 raised.

According to Greg Kaspar of Trinity Charities, last year's event saw 50 riders participate. While the ride is advertised as a 25-mile round-trip excursion, there are shortcuts for those who don't wish to spend as much time on the trail. A â┚¬Å”beginnersâ┚¬Â route allows for recreational riders to depart from the longer course and most riders will end at the same time. Organizers say that more than a dozen rest areas will be available for those needing a break during the ride or just some liquid refreshment.

The fun ride begins when riders meet at the YMCA parking lot at 8301 Potter Park Dr. at 8 a.m. for registration. Riders will take on the Legacy Trail at 9 a.m. The route runs from South Sarasota to the Venice Train Station and back.

Money raised funds Trinity Charities' HIV/AIDS programs assisting individuals and families living with the disease in area counties. This year, the AIDS Ride is sponsored by Macy's Department store.
