House votes to reaffirm commitment to defending DOMA

The House of Representatives voted to approve rules that reaffirm their commitment to defending the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), the federal law that prohibits same sex marriage.

In on of its first acts of the 113rd Congress on Jan. 3, the House voted 228-196 in favor of a resolution that authorizes the Bipartisan Legal Advisory Group (BLAG) to continue defending DOMA in court. This means more money spent on legal fees. The House has already sunk $1.5 million+ into defending DOMA. The resolution also authorizes BLAG to “speak for” the House when it comes to their position on DOMA.
