It might be time for Alanis to update her ’90s hit, as the governor of Alabama – a vocal supporter of “traditional marriage” and one who has said that marriage equality for the LGBT community was just a “social experiment” – is getting a divorce. He oughta know.
Gov. Robert Bentley’s wife filed paperwork asking for a divorce, saying, “there is such a complete incompatibility of temperament that the parties can no longer live together,” according to the filing.
Bentley has had a tough year, marriage wise. When campaigning to become governor, he vowed to never allow same-sex marriage to be legalized in the state of Alabama and thanks to the Supreme Court decision earlier this summer that was a campaign promise he could not deliver on.
“I have always believed in the Biblical definition of marriage as being between one man and one woman,” Bentley said in a statement after the Supreme Court ruling. “That definition has been deeply rooted in our society for thousands of years. Regardless of today’s ruling by the Supreme Court, I still believe in a one man and one woman definition of marriage.”
Now with his own marriage failing, the governor released a statement asking, “that you please respect the privacy of the Bentley family during this difficult time. There will be no further comment.”
The Bentleys married July 24, 1965. According to the documents, they separated in January 2015.
