For the first time in the 88 years the Academy has handed out Oscars, a movie distributor is pushing for nominations for transgender actresses.
Kitana Kiki Rodriguez and Mya Taylor star in Tangerine, a Sundance hit about two transgender prostitutes on a Christmas Eve adventure through Los Angeles. The campaign, from Duplass Brothers Production who produced the film and Magnolia Pictures who distributed it, will push for Rodriguez for Best Actress and Taylor for Best Supporting Actress.
Until now, actors who have gained nominations, and in some cases a win, for transgender characters were cisgender actors portraying them including Jared Leto in Dallas Buyers Club, Hilary Swank in Boys Don’t Cry and Felicity Huffman in Transamerica.
