Orlando’s Overheard: Pink bunnies, Pride Gala, Impulse and Parks

Splitting hares over a memorial

The great debate over the pink bunnies at Lake Como and Langford Park has been settled. The pink bunnies were installed in 2013 to honor Chase Smith, Orlando City Commissioner Patty Sheehan’s former aide. Often for the Easter holiday, Chase would dress up in a bunny suit to entertain the children. So these statues were certainly a fitting tribute.

You may have remembered we reported a (not-so-liked) resident of the Lake Como neighborhood filed a complaint over the statues and neighbors didn’t understand what the issue was, considering all the neighborhood children loved their pink lakeside art. Around the same time of the great hare debate, the bunny at Lake Como was also vandalized but later repaired. Well, finally the proper zoning was approved for the two bunnies and now they can stay.

Pride Gala recap

The MBA’s Pride Gala was a huge success, held at the Sheraton Orlando North in Maitland. The night was hosted by Jorge Estevez and Miss Sammy and it seemed like an evening straight out of the Golden Globes. The gala included entertainment by Todd Kimbro and Blue Star and even the Orlando Gay Chorus.

We naturally want to toot our own horns here, since our own publisher/owner Rick Claggett. Not only was he nominated for best businessman of the year but he also won despite the stiff competition. Congratulations, Rick!

Impulse Island

Impulse Group Orlando is hosting a fundraiser for the Pulse of Orlando fund. The fourth annual Rainbow Over Disappearing Island will be on September 10 with buses departing early in the morning to Ponce Inlet. The island itself disappears and reappears as the water recedes, during the time the island is accessible. Impulse promises a day of fun with drinks and games before heading back to Orlando.

Lights out at MK and a new house at UO

It was recently announced that the Magic Kingdom will be losing the overextended Main Street Electrical Parade. Not much has changed for the parade since it originally premiered in 1977. No word as to what will replace it, but Disney fanatics are hoping for the LED parade from Disneyland called Paint the Night, which has been rumored as a potential (temporary) replacement.

On the other side of the Universal, the last haunted attraction for Halloween Horror Nights was recently announced. And the house will be based on the popular American Horror Story anthology series, focusing on Season 1: Hell House, Season 2: Asylum and the most recent Lady Gaga infused season 5: Hotel.
