Netflix’s original animated series “The Dragon Prince” released its third season Nov. 22, promising viewers more backstory and even more LGBTQ representation.
Co-created by one of the minds behind the massively popular Nickelodeon show “Avatar: The Last Airbender,” “The Dragon Prince” tells the story of two princes and brothers who team up with an assassin who was supposed to kill them after discovering a secret that can unite the human realm and the magical realm called Xadia.
The show has been applauded by audiences for their diversity in race, sexuality and ability. Though previous seasons included minor LGBTQ characters, this season reveals that main character Rayla was raised by a gay couple after her parents were disgraced and implies the beginnings of a romantic relationship between General Amaya and a female Sunfire elf.
Netflix has not yet confirmed whether the show will be renewed for a fourth season despite its creators having a seven-season plan for it. Show co-creator Aaron Ehasz has recently been accused of sexist behavior by two former employees leading many fans to believe the show may not be renewed for a fourth season. Ehasz has publicly denied the accusations.
If the show does continue, viewers can most likely expect season four in Spring 2020, as new seasons of the show have premiered approximately once every six months.
