2022 Orlando Fringe Review: ‘Les MiserABBA’

What in the world could be more Fringe-y than taking an iconic tragedy like Les Miserable and retelling it through the music of beloved disco sensation ABBA? Nothing, and it worked.

You cannot talk about this show without highlighting how well its creator and choreographer, Bryan Cantrell, modernized the 19th century classic with a club twist that turns into a Black Lives Matter revolution. The song choices fit seamlessly into the storyline as if it was the perfect marriage of two very different forms of entertainment that shouldn’t have fit together.

Lead cast members Tyler Scott and Louie Canales, who played John and Javier respectively, both gave solid performances that would have made Agnetha and Anni-Frid proud. The only drawback in this production was the audience who seemed to be confused as to whether the show was a comedy or drama.

Whether you laugh or cry, “Les MiserABBA” is worth the price of admission. It’s ABBA!

“Les MiserABBA” plays in the Orange Venue through May 29. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit OrlandoFringe.org.
