Hollywood celebrates the best in film at the 96th Oscars

(Screengrab from Oscar’s YouTube)

After all the Oscar statuettes were handed out, “Oppenheimer” came away the big winner of the night winning seven Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor.

Christopher Nolan’s film about physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer and how he became the “father of the atomic bomb” was heavily favored to win many of the top prizes since the film came out last July as a part of the cultural phenomenon known as Barbenheimer. “Oppenheimer’s” counterpart “Barbie” didn’t fare as well, winning only one of its eight nominations for Best Original Song, Billie Eilish’s “What Was I Made For?”

The only other multi-winning films of the night were Yorgos Lanthimos’ Frankensteinian fantasy “Poor Things,” which won four Oscars: Best Actress for star Emma Stone, as well as wins for Best Production Design, Best Costume Design and Best Makeup and Hairstyling, and “The Zone of Interest,” which took home two Oscars for Best International Feature and Best Sound.

Other highlights included Da’Vine Joy Randolph winning Best Supporting Actress for “The Holdovers,” becoming the 10th Black woman to win it that category, and Cord Jefferson’s “American Fiction” and Justine Triet’s “Anatomy of a Fall” winning Best Adapted and Best Original Screenplays, respectively.

Japanese films also had a good night as Studio Ghibli won its second Oscar for Best Animated Feature with “The Boy and the Heron.” Studio Ghibli won its first Oscar more than 20 years ago in 2003 for the classic film “Spirited Away.” The King of the Monsters also made history as “Godzilla Minus One” took home the Oscar for Best Visual Effects” making it the first Oscar in Godzilla’s 70-year history.

This year’s ceremony didn’t include a lot of surprises as many of the night’s winners were heavily favored to win. The only category that was considered an all-out nailbiter was the Best Actress race between Stone and “Killers of a Flower Moon’s” Lily Gladstone.

This year’s ceremony was hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, his fourth time as master of ceremonies, and received mostly positive reviews. Much of the praise was for the musical performances, particularly Ryan Gosling’s performance of “I’m Just Ken” from “Barbie. Other highlights that had social media buzzing were John Mulaney’s comedic bit on “Field of Dreams” while he presented the Best Sound Oscar and a nearly nude John Cena presenting Best Costumes.
