Jesse Jeffers pulled up to his trailer early Feb. 3 and noticed something very different about his home. Spray painted swastikas and anti-gay slurs were painted in red across the white paint on the front of the home.
“I look up and I see the house and I said, ‘Oh my God,” Jeffers, 18, told the Pensacola News Journal.
The incident is being investigated as a hate crime, according to the Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office since it specifically addresses Jeffers’ sexual orientation. A spokesperson for the Sheriff’s Office called hate crimes a “rare occurrence” in the rural county.
One of the messages on the trailer said, “God don’t love you,” with a symbol of a heart in place of the word “love.”
The vandals even made it inside and spray painted a swastika on a fish tank and inside drapes.
“It’s not like ‘okay, let’s just spray paint somebody’s house,” Jeffers said. “Let’s put all kinds of crazy stuff on it. What they said on the front door and everything was outrageous.”
While there have been no arrests, Jeffers said he knows who vandalized his home. While Jeffers awaits an arrest, he has to contend with passersby, who are curious to see the damage.
