Lil Nas X released the music video to his latest single, “Montero (Call Me By Your Name),” on YouTube March 26 and it got social media talking.
The video features Nas X singing throughout a colorful Garden of Eden, scenes inspired by Greek mythology, a descent to hell on a stripper pole and more.
Fans celebrated the video’s release on social media, praising Nas X for being unapologetically queer throughout and for the videos stunning visuals. Nas X took to Instagram after the video’s release with a note to his 14-year-old self.
“Dear 14-year-old Montero,” the post reads. I wrote a song with our name in it. It’s about a guy I met last summer. I know we promised to never come out publicly, I know we promised to never be ‘that’ type of gay person, I know we promised to die with the secret, but this will open doors for many other queer people to simply exist. You see this is very scary for me, people will be angry, they will say I’m pushing an agenda. But the truth is, I am. The agenda to make people stay the f— out of other people’s lives and stop dictating who they should be. Sending you love from the future.”

The title of the song comes from Nas X’s birthname Montero Lamar Hill. Nas X shared a text from his dad later in the day in which he wrote “Very creative video. I got through it. Congratulations. Live life on your terms. Very PROUD of you.”
