“Undetectable” is a story of two men — Lex (played by Hunter Rogers) and Bradley (played by Micah Gregory) — who are a few months into a romantic relationship with each other. Lex has decided that tonight is the night he wants to go all the way with Bradley.
During the course of the one-hour production, which takes place entirely in Lex’s bedroom, the couple laugh, argue, debate and play with each other as they discuss an array of topics that include some serious subjects like safe sex, race, power dynamics and HIV, as well as some not-so-serious subjects like role playing and seeing each other naked for the first time. Being in the audience seems almost voyeuristic as you watch these two men, wearing next to nothing through the entire show, be intimate with each other. They cuddle, they kiss, they talk about their dreams, goals and fears, past relationships and where they are going as a couple. It is that kind of conversation you have no doubt had if you’ve been in a long-term relationship, but you have most likely done it without an audience.
This type of show only works if the actors can convince the audience that they are actually in a relationship, and Rogers and Gregory do that in spades. The chemistry between these two as they hash out what they need from each other is what gives this show its heart. Lex’s energy and optimism is balanced beautifully with Bradley’s hesitancy and real-world view, and by the end you feel like you have been through something meaningful with this couple.
