Reigns releases new poetry collection
Former Tampa Bay author and poet Steven Reigns has released a brand new book of poetry. Inheritance, Reigns’ first collection in nearly a decade, consists solely of autobiographical poetry. He says the book is about what one is given from friends, family, lovers and our culture. The Los Angeles resident will host a book release party on May 23 in his new hometown, but he plans to return to Florida in late July for a second signing event. Reigns also told us that he has readings scheduled in Seattle, Atlanta and New York City this fall. To check out the book or to order a copy, visit StevenReigns.com.

Designers win Scan Design contest
Life and business partners Scott Durfee and George Medeiros won the Tampa Bay regional Scan Design 2010 fall in Furniture Love Art Contest. The St. Petersburg residents, who have been together 20 years, are one of four regional first place finalists up for the grand prize of a cooperative advertisement with Scan Design in an upcoming issue of Florida Design Magazine. The prize is valued at $9,200. Scan Design was seeking artistic interpretations of “Fall in Furniture Love” and Durfee and Medeiros used palm spathe as a muse and created sculptures with an equilibrium between the two entities. A palm spathe is a flower pod and the pair use metal screws nails and wire to fashion the pieces to create an abstract design. Scan Design’s comments? “Your work was very unique and truly captured the theme of ‘Falling in Furniture Love.’ Well done!” The men will find out if they win the grand prize soon. We wish them luck!

Help out with the oil crisis
The trendy Tribeca ColorSalon is doing its part to curb the recent BP oil spill in the gulf’s effects on Florida’s beaches. The salon is collecting nylons to make booms to help trap the oil in the gulf. To donate, drop off nylons at either Tribeca location: 1600 E. 8th Ave. in Ybor City or at its Snow Park Area at Kennedy and N. Boulevard in South Tampa. Of course, feel free to get a cut and color while you’re visiting. For more information on the effort, call 813-242-4080.
