Davie transgender teen wins prom crown

A transgender teenager has been crowned prom queen of McFatter Technical High School in Davie. Andrew Viveros, 17, was given the honor May 27 at the Hyatt Regency Pier 66 in Ft. Lauderdale.

Viveros told the Sun Sentinel that he was â┚¬Å”in complete shockâ┚¬Â when they called his name, earning the crown despite some students campaigning against him. He told a reporter that openly gay senior Juan Macias was elected prom king, but Macias' designation did not create the controversy that Viveros' did.

Viveros is a member of the school's Gay-Straight Alliance. He told the press that he wrote a speech explaining why he should be allowed to run for prom queen and describing the daily difficulties of being transgender, which earned him the support of the school administrators.
