Donna Summer, disco queen and gay icon, has died after a battle with lung cancer.
According to TMZ, Summer was in Florida at the time of her death.
The singer attracted some controversy in the 80s, when it was reported that she made statements that AIDS is God’s punishement for homosexuality. Summer denied that statment in 1989, telling The Advocate, â┚¬ÂÂI've lost a lot of friends who have died of AIDSâ┚¬Â¦ people who ran my first album, who were really close to me, beautiful guys â┚¬Â¦ I never said, â┚¬ËœIf you are gay, God hates you. Come on. Be real. I don't understand that. Anybody who really knows me knows I wouldn't say that.â┚¬ÂÂ
Summer was 63 years old.
