June 28 marks 43rd anniversary of the Stonewall Riots

Today, June 28, marks 43 years since the Stonewall Riots, the defining event that marks the beginning of the gay rights movement in the United States and around the globe.

In the early morning hours, police raided the Stonewall Inn, a New York City gay club. The raids on gay establishments were nothing new, but Stonewall was different because the patrons fought back.
