Another Pinellas County City is poised to offer unmarried couples a chance to register as domestic partners. Treasure Island City Commissioners voted to move forward with plans to create a Domestic Partner Registry on Aug. 21.
A formal vote will happen sometime in September after the ordinance is written and a fee schedule is created. The ordinance, which looks like it will pass, would put Treasure Island along other Pinellas cities of St. Petersburg, Clearwater and Gulfport with domestic partnership registries. The City of Tampa started the trend on Florida’s West coast back in March.
The registry would provide unmarried couples, both gay and straight, access to each other in hospitals, an opportunity to be listed as emergency contacts, visitation in jail and the ability to make funeral arrangements for each other.
The City of Largo is scheduled to discuss the creation of its own DPR on Sept. 11. While the public won’t be allowed to comment at that time, a meeting later that month will provide time for area residents to discuss the ordinance.
