News report points to gay scandal as reason for Pope’s resignation

An Italian newspaper is reporting that the discovery of a gay Vatican network is linked to the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI.

La Repubblica reports that the day the Pope resigned, he had discovered a number of factions “united by sexual orientation,” and that Vatican officials had been subject to “external influence” which is being interpreted by the paper as a reference to blackmail.

The Pope reportedly made these discoveries via a 300-page report the he had requested from three Cardinals, asking them to look into a scandal last year involving leaked documents that revealed some corruption and internal conflict within Vatican leadership.

The Vatican’s spokesman has neither confirmed nor denied the report.
