The Football Association has publicly thrown its support behind London’s bid to host the 2018 Gay Games. The Federation of Gay Games has whittled the list of potential 2018 sites to London, Paris and Limerick. Orlando was on a short list as well, but was dropped in May.
“On behalf of the FA, I would like to extend a warm welcome to the visiting FGG delegation and wish the London bid team the very best of luck in securing this fantastic event for London,” said Alex Horne, general secretary of the FA.
The association represents the sport Americans call “soccer.”
The chair of the London 2018 bid, Alex Horne, appreciated the endorsement.
“We’re delighted to have the FA’s support for the London bid. As our national sport, this backing sends out a strong message that homophobia and transphobia are unacceptable not only in football, but in all sports.”
Other supporters of London include Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg, Sports Minister Hugh Robertson, London Mayor Boris Johnson and Speaker of the House of Commons John Bercow.
