FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) – A South Florida college student is asking an appellate court to recognize his same-sex marriage after he says he was denied in-state tuition.
Gildas Dousset filed an appeal in state court Wednesday, saying Florida’s laws barring recognition of out-of-state same-sex marriages are unconstitutional.
Dousset is a student at Florida Atlantic University. He and his spouse legally married in Massachusetts in 2013. Dousset applied for in-state tuition as the spouse of a long-time Florida resident, but he says he was turned down because the school refused to recognize his marriage. The National Center for Lesbian Rights is handling Dousset’s case.
Dousset says in a statement that he wants his marriage to be recognized just as any other student.
FAU officials did not immediately comment.
