WASHINGTON – President Obama declared June 2015 as LGBT Pride month, in which he calls for more support for LGBT youth and Congressional action to protect LGBT people within the workplace.
“I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim June 2015 as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Pride Month. I call upon the people of the United States to eliminate prejudice everywhere it exists, and to celebrate the great diversity of the American people,” he said in his written declaration.
Obama will host a reception at the White House to commemorate his declaration. Since the start of his administration, Obama has hosted a pride event each June. This one will be the seventh.
In the past, activists have used the event to put pressure on the president to act on issues concerning the LGBT community.
This year’s event will happen around the time of the Supreme Court’s ruling on same-sex marriage.
