WAYNE, N.J. (AP) – A county Republican leader who proposed to his longtime partner the day gay marriage was legalized in New Jersey says his party “needs to evolve on this issue.”
John Traier, the party’s Passaic County chairman, married Mark Peterson July 4 in Ringwood.
The Bergen Record reports the Fourth of July wedding was planned well before the Supreme Court’s landmark gay marriage decision, but Trainer sees it as a cool coincidence.
Saturday was also the 50th anniversary of one of the nation’s first gay rights protests, at Independence Hall in Philadelphia.
The 58-year-old Traier and 62-year-old Peterson have been together for 28 years. He says it’s a relief anyone in America can get married.
He hopes Republican leadership will steer the party toward accepting gay marriage.
