UCF opens LGBTQ History Month with Todrick Hall

The atmosphere was that of excitement in the Cape Florida Ballroom at the University of Central Florida Oct. 4 for the university’s LGBTQ History Month opening ceremony.

Art displayed around the room emphasized UCF’s LGBTQ History Month theme, “Maintained the Pulse,” meant to honor the victims of the Pulse shooting. The art was provided by Hidden Artists and Sean Wiggins, and focused on the LGBTQ community and Wiggins’ One Love Project.

“We’re not going to forget what happened during the summer, we’re going to keep the dialogue going,” Pride Director Marklyne Joachim says.

This is the fifth year UCF will celebrate LGBTQ History Month. The Division of Student Development and Enrollment Services, the Multicultural Academic Support Services and the Office of Social Justice and Advocacy joined together to create a series of events to celebrate, reflect and educate the campus community.

“We have programs geared toward healing after the events of this summer,” says Justin Andrade, the coordinator for LGBTQ services for UCF.

YouTuber and performer Todrick Hall was invited to be the keynote speaker for the event.

Hall performed several songs and dance routines from his latest hit long-form video, “Straight Outta Oz,” and shared his “7 Todrick Tips”: Believe, Entrepreneurship, Yasss, Own your brand, Naturally network, Challenge yourself and Evolve, or for short BEYONCE.

“You are special and you are loved and this world would not be the same without you in it,” Hall told the crowd.
