More celebrities have expressed their support of George Clooney’s call to boycott hotels owned by Hassanal Bolkiah, the Sultan of Brunei, in protest of the country’s new anti-gay stoning law.
Brunei’s Sharia law-based penal code took effect on April 3. People found guilty of adultery or gay sex can be punished with death by stoning. Punishment for lesbian sex is 100 lashes with a whip.
Clooney implored people in an op-ed for Deadline to boycott the nine Brunei-owned hotels located around the world. Elton John and Jamie Lee Curtis immediately gave their support and now more celebrities are joining them.
I commend my friend, #GeorgeClooney, for taking a stand against the anti-gay discrimination and bigotry taking place in the nation of #Brunei – a place where gay people are brutalized, or worse – by boycotting the Sultan’s hotels.https://t.co/8ymurW7hqm
