Singer-songwriter Melissa Etheridge revealed on Twitter May 13 that Beckett Cypher, her 21-year-old son, died as a result of opioids.
“Today I joined the hundreds of thousands of families who have lost loved ones to opiod addiction,” Etheridge wrote. “My son Beckett, who was just 21, struggled to overcome his addiction and finally succumbed to it today.”
Cypher was one of two children Etheridge had with her former partner Julie Cypher. They also have a daughter, Baily Jean Cypher, who is a year older than Beckett Cypher.
Etheridge and Julie Cypher famously conceived their two children with a sperm donation from legendary musician David Crosby. The couple split in 2000.
Etheridge, who had been streaming daily concerts from her home on Facebook Live, announced that the #ConcertsFromHome was cancelled today.
“He will be missed by those who loved him, his family and friends. My heart is broken. I am grateful for those who have reached out with condolences and I feel their love and sincere grief. We struggle with what else we could have done to save him, and in the end we know he is out of pain now,” Etheridge wrote. “I will sing again, soon. It has always healed me.”
