PORTLAND, Maine (AP) | Police in two southern Maine cities are investigating incidents in which residents received homophobic letters in the mail.

Three Portland residents reported receiving the letters Jan. 5, police said. Two of the victims displayed a Pride flag on their homes, while the other victim did not but is gay.“All three received identical letters with a Satanic Temple logo superimposed over a Pride Flag followed by a threatening homophobic slur,” the Portland Maine Police Department said in a release. “The South Portland Police Department is investigating a similar incident that occured in their city. We are working with them to determine the source of the letters and if there is any connection between any of the victims.”

They also noted that the “Satanic Temple logo with the Pride flag that was used on the letters is available on their website. There is no indication that the Satanic Temple or its members are responsible for this mailing.”

Portland Police Chief Frank Clark added that the department hopes “to be able to quickly identify the person or persons responsible for these mailings and are asking for the public’s assistance.”
