Happy International Asexuality Day: Community members celebrate online

Hashtags #InternationalAsexualityDay and #InternationalAceDay began trending on Twitter April 6 as members of the asexual community celebrated the first ever International Asexuality Day (IAD).

IAD “celebrates the full asexual spectrum: asexual, greysexual, demisexual and all other ace identities, and it’s designed to promote the work of ace advocates, especially in non-anglophone and/or non-Western countries, though everyone is welcome to participate.” The International Asexuality Organization said the tenets of the organizations are advocacy, celebration, education and solidarity.

Asexual is the lack of sexual attraction to others, or a low interest in sexual activity, demisexual is one who only is sexually attracted to someone when they have an emotional bond with the person and graysexuality is asexual but does not fit into the three primary categories sex-repulsed, sex-neutral, and sex-positive.

In honor of the day, Twitter user @sleepixgstars posted, “Today is #internationalaceday so some friendly reminders: – cishet acespectrum folks are part of the LGBTQIA+ community – asexuals don’t need to be ‘fixed’ – asexuals are valid – asexuals and aromantics are different but equally valid – demisexuals are valid – acephobes, stfu <3.”

Twitter user @wigglytickly who identifies as asexual offered a way to bond with a member of the community.

Sex is gross; let’s just tickle fight and eat mac n cheese. #internationalaceday,” @wigglytickly wrote.

Twitter user @spofiee, who identifies as demisexual and demiromantic, wrote “I’m proud to be demisexual and demiromantic, and everyone on the ace spectrum is valid as heck.”

Many more tweeted out educational information, support and artwork to celebrate.
