As promotional content was being released in preparation for the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s (MCU) new Disney+ original series “Loki,” many fans were quick to spot a small detail in the new trailer for the show.
For years fans have been speculating and awaiting confirmation that the character, Loki Laufeyson, is in fact gender-fluid. Thanks to the last trailer before the release of the show’s first episode and now confirmation by the actor Tom Hiddleston himself, queer representation in the MCU is expanding.
In the video posted to the official Loki Twitter account below, the word “Fluid” is seen in the first frame where the supervillain’s Time Variance Authority file is displayed.

Hiddleston spoke with Inverse about what it means to have the character be gender-fluid.
“[The] breadth and range of identity contained in the character has been emphasized and is something I was always aware of when I was cast 10 years ago,” Hiddleston said.
Although many were surprised to see such an announcement, comic book fans saw it coming from miles away. In the comics, 2014’s Original Sin Vol 1 #2 comic to be specific, there was a clear reference to Loki’s gender fluidity. Odin, the father of Thor and Loki, says to his children at one point: “My son, my daughter and my child who is both.” Here, Odin references Thor as his son, Hela as his daughter and Loki who is “both.”
With the series having released its first episode June 9, there are sure to be further references or mentions of the supervillain’s gender fluidity throughout the show.
