ORLANDO | Pulse is one step closer to being officially named a national memorial.
The U.S. Senate passed a bill June 9 designating Pulse as a national memorial just days before the five-year mark of the nightclub shooting.
H.R. 49 — sponsored by three of Central Florida’s Congressional representatives: Reps. Darren Soto, Stephanie Murphy and Val Demings — passed in the House May 12.
Soto, Murphy and Demings all took to Twitter to recognize the passing of the bill.
“I am honored that my bill with @RepStephMurphy & @RepValDemings for a #PulseNationalMemorial passed the House & thank @SenRickScott & the Senate for taking action #ForThe49,” tweeted Soto.

“As we approach the 5-year anniversary of the Pulse shooting this weekend, the Senate just passed our bill to designate a #PulseNationalMemorial to honor the 49 innocent lives that were taken from us that terrible day,” wrote Murphy.

onePULSE Foundation celebrated the news with a post on Facebook, stating “We are thrilled that the U.S. Senate passed the bill designating Pulse nightclub as a national memorial. A very special thank you to Senators Rick Scott, Marco Rubio and Alex Padilla for introducing the bill in the Senate. The unanimous consent is such welcome news as we are set to mark the five-year remembrance of the Pulse tragedy. This recognition from both the House and Senate means so much to the LGBTQ+ community. #WeWillNotLetHateWin.”
The bill will now go to President Joe Biden to be signed.
