Fort Lauderdale- Tea Party-affiliated protestors confronted Charlie Crist, candidate for Florida Governor, outside of a book signing in Fort Lauderdale, calling Crist a “commie whore” and shouting that that he “looks like an AIDS victim.”
The group, from the Fort Lauderdale Chapter of the Tea Party Republicans, was gathered outside of a Barnes and Noble Feb. 20. A Sun-Sentinel Broward politics reports tweeted under the Twitter handle @browardpolitics after the event:
“On his way out, one of the Republican protestors called @CharlieCrist a ‘commie whore.’ And that was the most printable comment.”
Crist was at the event signing copies of The Party’s Over: How the Extreme Right Hijacked the GOP and I Became a Democrat. Shark-Tank.com reported that the protestors continued to shout at Crist that he looked like an “AIDS victim” as he walked toward his car.
After the actions of the Tea Partiers, Crist received support from Bette Midler via Twitter, where she referenced the heavy funding by many wealthy individuals that the Tea Party receives: “Yesterday, at the book signing in Fort Lauderdale, @TeaPartiers shouted ‘commie whore’ at @CharlieCrist and other insults. Wonder who paid ‘em?”
