Shirts of Bamboo no more
The economy has claimed another LGBT-friendly business in St. Petersburg. Shirts of Bamboo, which has been located along the Grand Central District for nearly four years, announced it will shutter its doors in September. The store’s unique collection of bamboo clothing, towels and robes are now considered clearance items since the store will no longer be in operation. The management of the store released the following statement: “Thank you all for your support, both financial and emotional, over the years. We truly have enjoyed meeting you at the Fairs, Saturday Market and other up-close and personal events. Look for us in the upcoming weeks at some of these events for outstanding deals and the chance for us to say farewell.”
Hampton flies rainbow flag
The Hampton Inn & Suites in Ybor City has always been LGBT friendly. It has hosted film festival receptions and has been a member of the GaYbor District Coalition since its inception. But the hotel took another huge step in July by displaying a large rainbow flag at its entrance on 7th Avenue. The colorful LGBT symbol now flies alongside the American Flag and the State of Florida flag.
A new “gay beach?”
For years Sunset Beach has been the place for LGBTs to congregate on Sunday afternoons. But some have felt increasingly uncomfortable along the white shores as more and more young partiers from a nearby bar have encroached south. So a group of LGBTs have started a drive to convince “family” to join them at Fort DeSoto’s State Park Beach. While the parking is free at Fort DeSoto, there is a toll bridge cars must pass to enter into the state park. There is no official “gay” beach in Pinellas County.
Café Dolce celebrates three years
It’s hard to believe that it’s been three years since Café Dolce opened in the former home of Grinders Coffee Shop along St. Petersburg’s Grand Central District. But July 21 marked the anniversary for owner Phil Buffa’s Italian restaurant. Congratulations to Buffa and the entire staff. For more information on the restaurant, visit DiCafeDolce.biz.
