St. Pete could see first out gay councilman

On Nov. 3, voters may make history in St. Petersburg. Steve Kornell could become the city’s first-ever openly gay elected official—that is, if his constituency turns out at the polls.

Kornell, who has utilized Facebook and the LGBT community of St. Petersburg to raise awareness for his District 5 campaign, is confident that voters will turn out to support him Nov. 3. In the September Primary, he earned nearly 50% of the vote. The general election is a runoff between Kornell and Angela Rouson.

“I am so proud of everyone who has been a part of my team,” Kornell said. “I just need everyone to keep working and we will be happy on Nov. 3.”

Kornell, who is single and has never hidden his sexuality during the campaign, has worked with the Pinellas County schools as a social worker since 2004. This is his first political campaign.
