Missing FSU student’s death appears to be an accident

RyanUhreAbstr Tallahassee- A preliminary autopsy report shows the death of Florida State University student Ryan Uhre appears to have been accidental and he may have fallen from the second story of the building where his body was found.

Uhre’s body was found on Feb. 18 in a building on College Avenue in downtown Tallahassee. He had been missing for more than two weeks, after he was last seen leaving a Tallahassee on Super Bowl Sunday, Feb. 2.

Officers said they believe he was alone at the time of in the incident and it appears he fell through a window on the second story. Medical examiners said he died from injuries he sustained after falling onto the concrete floor.

“At this time, it is believed Mr. Uhre was alone when this terrible accident occurred but the final report will not be complete until all data is reviewed, including toxicology reports,” the police department said in a statement.

While Uhre was missing, Norm Kent, publisher of the South Florida Gay News, wrote an op-ed taking the media to task for not mentioning Uhre was gay when they reported on his disappearance.

“If you are a young gay man hanging out with Alpha Delta Phi frat brothers in a straight sports bar, the end of that game is the beginning of your night. You are not going home with a girl, and you don’t want to go home alone. So you go somewhere else, and don’t tell any of your straight friends,” Kent wrote.

He said Uhre came out to one of his gay teachers in high school, but acknowledges that it’s unclear whether Uhre was living an openly gay life in Tallahassee.

Uhre was a legislative intern and worked also at a call center with one of his fraternity brothers, according to WPLG Local 10. When he did not show up to his job or internship, his family and friends knew something was wrong.
