Ellen DeGeneres’ coming out episode on the ABC series Ellen is one of the most influential pop culture moments of the last 25 years, according to Entertainment Weekly.
The unofficial bible to many who worship pop culture turns 25 this year, and to celebrate this milestone, EW is releasing a 25th anniversary issue listing the 10 most influential pop culture moments since 1990.
“It was a watershed moment,” Entertainment Weekly Deputy Editor Meeta Agrawal said on the Today Show. “To have this major leading character of a primetime sitcom say on the show ‘yes, I’m gay’ really paved the way for shows like Will & Grace and The L Word afterward, and made it more mainstream in that moment.”
The magazine also lists the release of Brokeback Mountain in 2005 as one of the most influential pop culture moments of the last quarter century.
Entertainment Weekly’s moments also include the premiere of the HBO series Sex & The City in 1998, Janet Jackson’s wardrobe malfunction at the 2004 Super Bowl and the death of her brother Michael Jackson in 2009.
