Animal rights activist Carole Baskin, one of the divisive subjects of Netflix’s docuseries “Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness,” has come out as bisexual.
Baskin is the CEO of the Tampa-based animal sanctuary Big Cat Rescue. She also competed on the 29th season of ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars” until her elimination Sept. 29.
The activist came out while discussing that and more with the LGBTQ outlet PinkNews. In an interview published Oct. 19, she shared “I have always considered myself to be bisexual. Even though I’ve never had a wife, I could just as easily have a wife as a husband.”
Baskin also reflected on her youth, noting that “I was always very male-oriented in the things I did. I never had any mothering instincts or anything, you know, I never played with dolls. And so I always thought that there was something off there that I couldn’t quite put my finger on.”
During the 80s, she added, she was engaged to a psychologist who worked primarily with the LGBTQ community. It was then that she realized “I had just as equal feelings for women as I did for men.”
The outlet also discussed fellow “Tiger King” subject Joe Exotic, the openly gay man currently serving a 22-year sentence in federal prison. He was convicted in 2019 on 17 charges of animal abuse and two counts of murder for hire to plot Baskin’s death.
Asked if she felt he was a good representative for the LGBTQ community, Baskin responded that “he’s an embarrassment to the human community.
“It’s not a matter of what your sexuality is,” she continued. “This man is just a deviant in the way that he treats human life and animal life.”
