BALTIMORE (AP) | An openly LGBTQ, former state delegate says she’ll try to unseat Maryland’s lone Republican congressman, a man with an anti-LGBTQ record who’s been a staunch ally of Donald Trump.
The Baltimore Sun reported that Democrat Heather Mizeur will run against six-term U.S. Rep. Andy Harris next year.
In making her announcement, Mizeur immediately referenced Harris’ efforts to contest the 2020 presidential election results. Harris was a leader in arguing on behalf of Trump’s unfounded claims of voter fraud.
Mizeur said that Harris was among a group of Republican lawmakers committing “an unforgivable betrayal” by not protecting the nation’s system of democracy. She also referenced the deadly riot at the U.S. Capitol.
Harris has maintained his support of Trump and has said there is no connection between his election objections and the deadly Capitol siege. He represents parts of the counties of Baltimore, Carroll and Harford, as well as the Eastern Shore.
In 2014, Mizeur tried and failed to become the state’s first female governor and the first openly gay person to be elected governor in the country. She lost in the Democratic primary.
The Washington Blade reported that “Harris has represented Maryland’s 1st congressional district — which includes the state’s Eastern Shore — since 2011. The Human Rights Campaign has previously noted the Maryland Republican has ‘gone out of his way’ to support anti-LGBTQ legislation.”
