A grand marshal of Olympian proportions is announced

The 2010 Come Out With Pride (COWP) theme “A Pride of Olympian Proportions” will carry over into the pride parade’s grand marshal. Gold medal diver Greg Louganis will be the man of honor for the event. COWP senior executive producer Dr. David Baker-Hargrove said Louganis a logical choice that people for the Olympics-themed event.

“His name kept coming up over and over,” Baker-Hargrove said.

Louganis will appear in the parade and he’ll speak on the main stage before the entertainment.

The entertainers this year are Brian Kent, who is behind the dance club hit “Whatcha Doin To Me” and Martha Wash, the R&B diva who made it big as part of The Weather Girls when they released “It’s Raining Men.”

Baker-Hargrove made the grand marshal announcement at the Heaven & Hell Come Out With Pride Fundraiser on April 23. About 120 people attended and they raised $2,100 through admission donations, raffles and bar sales. Savoy donated liquor. All proceeds benefitted COWP.

Baker-Hargrove said the first half of the year was about shaping the event, and now the second part of the year is for making COWP happen.

“We will have five other fundraisers during the summer to help continue to generate interest in the event and raise money,” he said. “[The COWP] production team goes into full swing in May.”

He said information about those fundraisers will be released as they are finalized, but the next one is scheduled for May 29.
