Senator Bill Nelson is making moves to rescue Florida’s ailing AIDS Drug Assistance Program (ADAP), which has 2,700 people on a waiting list for life-saving medications. Nelson sent a letter to President Obama and Florida Gov. Rick Scott urging their immediate attention to the crisis.
Nelson cited the programs current budget shortfall, noting that there would be a gap in funding starting in February, till a new round of money comes through in April.
“Such a lapse in treatment can lead to a number of life-threatening conditions for the thousands of HIV/AIDS patients in Florida who rely on ADAP medication to maintain their quality of life as they struggle with this debilitating disease,” Nelson wrote to Obama.
Nelson’s letter to Scott marks the Senator’s first official communication with Florida’s new governor.
