Australian gay icon and dance floor diva Kylie Minogue is back with a brand new, retro-inspired single.
“Say Something” serves as the lead single from Minogue’s upcoming album “Disco,” which is set to be released Nov. 6. The album, which marks the singer’s 15th studio album, is the follow-up to 2018’s “Golden,” which found the singer fusing her signature dance-pop sound with country influences.
The track has been described as “an introspective dance track,” with an emotional resonance that speaks to the isolation induced by the recent coronavirus pandemic.
“[The song has] lyrics that feel pertinent for our quarantine days: ‘We’re a million miles apart in a thousand ways…Love is love it never ends, can we all be as one again?’” Claire Shaffer of Rolling Stone wrote.
Tom Breihan from Stereogum characterized the song as a “rich, hard-thumping pop song with a squiggly keyboard line, a rubbery guitar riff and a big gospel-chorus finale” and praised its timeless quality.
“It could’ve come out at any point in the past 20 or 30 years,” Breihan wrote.
The song was co-produced by Biff Stannard, who’s also had a hand in crafting previous Kylie hits such as “Love at First Sight,” “In Your Eyes” and “In My Arms.”
“Say Something” is not the first time Minogue has looked to the past for musical inspiration. “Spinning Around,” the lead single from her seventh album “Light Years” also experimented with the disco genre. The song would peak at No. 1 on the UK Official Singles Chart Top 100.
Minogue rose to prominence in 1986 with a role on the Australian soap opera “Neighbours.” She kicked off her global music career two years later in 1988 with the release of “The Loco-Motion.” Since then, Minogue has gone on to accumulate commercial and critical success, selling more than 70 million records worldwide and scoring a Grammy for Best Dance Recording in 2004.
Minogue has also amassed a strong gay following over the course of her career, something which the singer attributes to her personal authenticity.
“I didn’t become a gay icon or become popular in the gay community for doing something specific,” Minogue told The Advocate in a 2014 interview. “That happened just because I was being myself.”
Minogue’s fans, affectionately called Lovers by the songstress, are overjoyed with the release of “Say Something” and Minogue’s return to the music scene.
