The CW has released its first look at Javicia Leslie’s “Batwoman” in a redesigned cape and cowl.

The network announced earlier this year that Leslie would replace Ruby Rose as the lead of the GLAAD Award-nominated superhero series. The openly LGBTQ actor will play the character of Ryan Wilder in its forthcoming second season.

“I am extremely proud to be the first Black actress to play the iconic role of Batwoman on television, and as a bisexual woman, I am honored to join this groundbreaking show which has been such a trailblazer for the LGBTQ+ community,” Leslie said at the time.

Two images of the updated suit were shared Oct. 26. The official “Batwoman” social media channels captioned the reveals with “Becoming her own Batwoman.”

Leslie and “Batwoman” Executive Producer Carole Dries discussed changes to the character’s suit at DC Fandom in September, an online convention celebrating the comic company’s properties. “As Ryan embraces everything that makes her special, she adjusts the suit to fit her physically and figuratively,” Dries shared. “This meant creating a new body design and new cowl that was undeniably a statement that screamed ‘powerful.’”

“I love the fact that Ryan is becoming her own Batwoman — it’s her style, her swag, and her moment!” Leslie added. “I felt it was important that viewers could tell by the silhouette that Batwoman was a Black girl. With the form-fitting suit and beautiful Afro, we definitely nailed it!”

The second season of “Batwoman” is expected to release in January.
