Ivory Aquino (“When They See Us,” “Tales of the City”) has joined the cast of HBO Max’s “Batgirl,” the first live-action film based on the popular DC Comics character.

Aquino, who is transgender, will play Alysia Yeoh, the titular star’s best friend and first major trans character to appear in DC’s extended cinematic universe. The character first appeared in the “Batgirl” comic book in 2011 and was created by Gail Simone and Ardian Syaf.

Aquino joins “Batgirl” and Barbara Gordon herself Leslie Grace, her father Commissioner Gordon J.K. Simmons, the villainous Firefly Brendan Fraser and “Batman” legend Michael Keaton in the film.

Filming is currently underway for a 2022 streaming premiere.
