CNN anchor Anderson Cooper announced the birth of his child on air late April 30.
Wyatt Morgan Cooper was born April 27 via surrogate, weighing 7 pounds 2 ounces. The newborn’s proud father shared details following a weekly global town hall on COVID-19.
“It has been a difficult time in all of our lives, and there are certainly many hard days ahead,” the anchor shared. “It is, I think, especially important in these times of trouble to try to hold on to moments of joy and moments of happiness. Even as we mourn the loss of loved ones, we are also blessed with new life and new love.
“On Monday, I became a father,” he continued emotionally. “I’ve never actually said that before, out loud, and it still kind of astonishes me. I am a dad. I have a son, and I want you to meet him.”
Wyatt is named for his father, Cooper shared, who died when he was 10. Morgan was chosen because it potentially could have been Anderson’s name, a favorite of his parents.
The anchor warmly discussed his family, longtime and new, emphasizing the incredible blessing he’d received from his surrogate. She “carried Wyatt, watched over him lovingly, tenderly, and gave birth to him,” he shared.
Cooper also reflected on parenting as a gay man. “I never thought it would be possible to have a child, and I am so grateful for all those who have paved the way, and for the doctors and nurses and everyone involved in my son’s birth,” he said.
